Not sure why you considered Volumio as a replacement for all of what Roon does, given that it's 'just' a networked music player, so just equivalent to a Roon endpoint.JRiver Media Center doesn't support Qobuz nor TIDAL online music streaming services. Does this mean you just want the Roon alternative to provide your own music files?Also, JRiver doesn't in itself support AirPlay - you only get that with the version of JRiver Media Center that runs on Mac computers and because the AirPlay support is actually coming from the Mac itself.Does this mean that you require the Roon replacement software to run on a Mac computer?If so, why can't you use the obvious Roon alternative for the Mac, ie, iTunes?BTW, what device (hardware & software) exactly is your current Roon Core server? Yes Volumio was 'briefly' considered as I'd been told it was a cheaper alternative to Roon, which, after looking isn't.I've got JRiver to work but it's a little clunky compared to Roon.As for the mystery PC, it's just a small forma factor PC, 1tb SSD, AMD Athlon 2.2Ghz, 16gb ram running Windows. It's running headless at the moment as I'm trialing Roon and it seems to be more than capable.

That PC itself doesn't play anything, it's just the Roon core. I have a PC in the living room which does play music, and iMac for work which I also use for background music when I'm working. I have an iphone, and my wife iphone and ipad which are all used. We have a Cambridge Audio Airplay speaker in the kitchen and one in the dining room.I've not found anything with the simplicity of Roon to allow me to play from anything to anything. It's very versatile.My problem is a subscription to play something which is actually mine on something I own! It's only used for my music, no streaming services. This is why I'd prefer to purchase software rather than be held to ransom if prices increase etc.There is no doubting though that the quality Roon outputs is out of this world. I'll check out LMS if it can do all the above but it looks like I may have to stick down the subscription route. If you are willing to install & spend a little time to properly configure LMS for your particular devices, there's no reason why you won't experience the same audio quality as Roon from your music files. Don't forget, Roon has no influence on the audio quality of your AirPlay (or Chromecast - if it's the CXN V2) supporting devices, since AirPlay (& Chromecast) has nothing to do with the Roon Advanced Audio Transport (RAAT) network audio protocol as used by native Roon endpoints.However, LMS can't compete with Roon's user interface, which is arguably second to none and is its actual main selling point - rather than its audio quality. Roon doesn't support Spotify, but of course this isn't an issue with any of your devices, given that the Spotify app can connect to them directly at least via AirPlay, if not Spotify Connect (the CXN & the CA speakers if they are relatively recent models) or even Chromecast (the CXN if it's V2 - you didn't say). LMS does provide Spotify Connect support (via the Spotty 3rd party plugin), BTW, but it can only be used with a Spotify premium account.LMS should have no issue with your MP3 & FLAC files, as it supports all of the usual audio formats and your hi-res 24bit/192kHz albums should also be ok.My advice would be to install the UPnP/DLNA Bridge plugin as well as the AirPlay Bridge one, as that would allow the CXN to play the hi-res file tracks untouched - AirPlay always network streams audio at CD res 16bit/44.1kHz so would downsample the audio output from your hi-res tracks to match.

Works fine for me. Don't use spotify etc so can't comment. The price of the Annual subscription for Roon has not changed, and is unlikely to any time soon. The Lifetime option did take nearly 4.5 years to break even point, which has now gone to 7+.

So you could still go with Roon with the annual subscription knowing that in 2 or 3 years time if something better emerges you can switch safe in the knowledge that you have had the best option available at the time and can really judge if an alternative is indeed a better solution. Expectations are that Roon will eventually completely withdraw the Lifetime option, and run solely on annual (and who knows, maybe monthly) subscription basis. Withdrawal of Lifetime might only be a few months away. I use Roon with an extension that integrates it with Logitech Harmony and so I have some control of Roon via Alexa (just basic play/pause/next/previous/volume/mute and some favourite playlists and radios, but not by name). Interesting thread - I have been running Squeezeboxes for over 12 years. I have 4 Duets's and a Squeezebox Boom. I used to run my own LMS to serve up my content from my network, but for the last 7 years have ditched that and use mysqueezebox.com with my Deezer account and most recently a Tidal trial.

Truthfully the old, old squeezbox hardware seems to struggle a bit with hi-res Tidal content and I have been looking for an upgrade path. I've picked up a Pi with a Allo Digione Signature and am using it as an endpoint whilst I trial Roon, but at $699 for a lifetime subscription is pretty pricey.I'm not overly interested in pretty UI or enriched metadata Roon is famed for, I am interested in being able to sync playback or play independently. I like the idea of broad device support. I'm not adverse to upgrading hardware (the 2nd hand market for squeezeboxes is strong) and I like new toys;-). I must be able to control playback, selection, etc from both iOS and Android devices.

I need the solution to play from streaming services, particularly the hi-res audio providers, it is a bonus if it will play local network hosted content, but not essential. Ideally there is no requirement for local hardware beyond the endpoints themselves.I'm planning to allow the Roon trial to run its course and end it. Then setup the Pi as a squeezebox endpoint and test Tidal streaming via Mysqueezebox.com, to see it this gives me what I want without the big bill. If it works I'll use that $699 saved to upgrade some more of my endpoints;-).
